Enhanced Private Eye Examination

At Fiona Watt Optometrists, we believe that your ocular health and eyesight is of the utmost importance and should be well looked after.  For years patients have depended on us to provide this valuable, trustworthy service.  We are dedicated to building long lasting relationships based on trust and integrity with every single patient.  Every patient is treated as an individual so the Optometrist will tailor the eye examination to your needs, guaranteeing you a thorough and full examination completed professionally in a relaxed environment.

Our private eye examination, enabling the use of advanced equipment, allows us to assess the health of your eye to its best capacity.  As well as providing you with the best prescription suited to your needs and lifestyle, we are able to capture a 200 degree view of the retina in one image.  We will monitor and diagnosis ocular conditions, including cataracts, diabetes, glaucoma and age related macular degeneration.  The eye examination usually takes 40 minutes.

Upon arrival you will be greeted by our reception staff who will confirm your personal details and briefly ask you the reason for your visit.  You will then be pre-screened before seeing the optometrist. Your existing spectacles will be focimetered so the optometrist has an idea of your current prescription.

When ready, the optometrist will take you to the consulting room to begin the eye examination.

• Full history and symptoms.
• Medical history update.
• FDT filed test.
• Daytona retinal Optomap photography.
• Fundus digital photography.
• Internal and external eye examination.
• Spectacle refraction.
• Ocular Motor Balance.
• Intraocular pressures.
• Advice on ocular health and prescription.

Once your examination is complete, your optometrist will explain their findings to you, including any updates to your prescription that might be required. They’ll also be happy to answer any questions you have, as well as taking the time to recommend suitable products for your needs, wants and lifestyle.  Additional tests may be advised by the optometrists depending on your needs and ocular health.

National Health Service (NHS)-funded sight tests in England – who is eligible?

In England, you qualify for an NHS-funded sight test if:

• You’re aged under 16.
• You’re aged 16, 17 or 18 and are in full-time education.
• You’re aged 60 or over.
• You’re registered as partially sighted (sight impaired) or blind (severely sight impaired).
• You’ve been diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma.
• You’re 40 or over and your mother, father, brother, sister, son or daughter has been diagnosed with glaucoma.
• You’ve been advised by an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) that you’re at risk of glaucoma.
• You’re a prisoner on leave from prison.
• You’re eligible for an NHS complex lens voucher – your optometrist can advise you about your entitlement.

You’re also entitled to an NHS sight test if you:

• Receive Income Support.
• Receive Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (not contribution-based).
• Receive Pension Credit Guarantee Credit.
• Receive income-based Employment and Support Allowance.
• Are awarded Universal Credit and meet the criteria on earnings limit.
• Are entitled to, or named on, a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate.
• You are named on a valid NHS certificate for full help with health costs (HC2).
• People named on an NHS certificate for partial help with health costs (HC3) may also get help.

NHS-funded mobile eye tests

• If you qualify for an NHS-funded sight test, you may be entitled to NHS-funded mobile services where the ophthalmic practitioner comes to visit you:
• At home – if you’re unable to leave home unaccompanied because of physical or mental illness or disability.
• At a residential or care home – if you normally live there and you’re unable to leave the home unaccompanied because of physical or mental illness or disability.
• At a day centre – if you would have difficulty getting a sight test from an optometrist at their practice because of physical or mental illness or disability, or because you have difficulty communicating your health needs without help.

NHS optical voucher

A NHS optical voucher helps towards the cost of glasses or contact lenses.

You can get a voucher in England if you:

• Are under 16 years of age.
• Are in full time education and aged 16, 17 or 18.
• Need complex lenses.
• Are entitled to, or named on a valid NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate.
• Are named on a valid HC2 certificate.
• Your partner gets Income Support, Income Based Jobseekers Allowance, Employment Support Allowance or Pension Credit Guarantee Credit – Incapacity Benefit and Disability Living Allowance don’t count as they’re not income related.
